Bailey's Taproom

Category: Bars
Neighborhood: Downtown

A large group of us meet us after work at least one night a week for quite some time. They are all heavy beer drinkers and love the fact that they can get several dozen beers on tap all a short stumble from their corporate offices. I enjoy the open atmosphere, the plentiful seating and the company of my lush friends. No one seems to mind the cash bar as it keeps the inebriation under fairly strict control. No surprises that drinks for the teetotaler such as myself are limited to VISO or a pitcher of tap water kept up at the main counter. El Grillo from across the street will even deliver your order to you at the Baileys Taproom.

Plain & Simple Mex-Mex with a very casual attitude and dirt cheap prices. There isn't an item on the menu that I've tried that hasn't been excellent. Various sauces & salsa are available to allow you spice to your particular given taste.  If you happen to be drinking across the street at the Tugboat, the helpful staff will gladly deliver you food directly to you. Word of warning for the prude of heart, they share a bathroom with the Mary's Club next door so don't be shocked by the gyrating bodies and thumping music.

Mmm. Tempura Sashimi Bento with Green Tea.

The very first French/Japanese fusion experience I've had outside of Japan, notorious for their love of all things French from bread to Art Nouveau. That French flair is present in every dish from the extra color and presentation of the Chicken Teriyaki to the flourish of the various sushi rolls. Nice selection of Sake for those who enjoy the drink, warm or cold. For those of us on the west side technology lunch junket, Le Hana is a wonderful diversion from the usual chain fast-food clustered all over the nearby area.

Rocket! Yeah! Satellite of Love!

Sorry had a brief Def Leppard moment from my youth....

Our dinner - Burger & Fries + Arugula Salad & Indian Beef Skewers
Their Dinner - Braised Beef & Grilled Scallops + Sweet Meets
Drinks - Calypso Coffee & Ginger Beer

A bit empty for a Tuesday night with only six booked tables, but the view was spectacular as the sunset. The wait staff pleasant, attendant and willing to answer a larger number of my idiotic questions about food preparation with a polite nod & smile. Atmosphere was hospitable without being too formal.

Ground Kontrol Classic Arcade

Neighborhood: Old Town

Pinball is one of my almost constant guilty obsessions so Ground Kontrol is always able to please with several dozen devices always available to accept my quarters like a drunken sailor. Whither the classic Doctor Who or Adam's Family, there is always something worth playing until the carpal tunnel syndrome forces me to stop. As an added bonus, live DJ's often spin on the evening on the weekends and the occasional live band is booked as well. The extra effort on the audio stimulation helps lend some extra atmosphere to the pure nerd factor of just entering the building. My inner nine year old screams with glee!

Floating World Comics

Tiny little indie comic shop nestled in heart of Old Town. I am always able to acquire a missing issue of something whenever I stop by which always make it worth a trip whenever I happen to be in the area. The owner is the sole proprietor and is always willing to answer any questions you have about the stock in his shop or the industry as a whole.

Escape from New York Pizza

Category: Pizza
Neighborhoods: Alphabet District, Northwest

3 star rating

Wandering around NW, the best place to find a slice and a soda is Escape From New York. The simple pies are identical to the EFNY in New York City apart from the absent nigh-legendary Gotham City water. Be prepared to bring cash as they do not accept other forms of payment. Foreign currency is accepted as long as it is not something they do not have up in their collection on the wall by the register.

Tea Zone and Camellia Lounge

As a total tea novice the staff were quite willing to listen to my neophyte questions and recommend me something new that suited my tastes. Table service seems to alternate between non-existent and hovering depending on entirely random variables. Nevertheless, requests for additional hot water for a second steep are always greeted with a warm response rather than a hard sale.

Kenny & Zuke's Deli

Category: Delis
Neighborhood: Downtown

4 star rating

When it is very late at night and you've been partying like a maniac, there are very few places in town that serve something approaching real food. The usual locations are all greasy spoons and dice bars, Kenny & Zuke's is a culinary wonderland in comparison. The late night menu is quite pared down from their usual fare, but you will find something to help sop up all the alcohol that was very likely hand made earlier in they day and probably not from a can. Both the grilled cheese and the steak & eggs have become the main stay recovery comfort food before finally heading home to crash for the evening. My only real complaint is that while they appear to have a massively diverse soda menu, they never have my first choice in stock when I want to order it. Of course, this may have more to do with it being 2:30am than I want to admit.

Sabala's Mount Tabor

Categories: Bars, Music Venues
Neighborhoods: Southeast Portland, Hawthorne

3 star rating

The nigh infamous Mount Tabor has changed hands at least four times that I know of in the last decade. The latest incarnation is the Mt. Tabor Legacy and it is still the seeping den of inequity and cigarette smoke that you have come to know and abhor since the building was first occupied. The dregs of the musical industry ply their trade at this venue which will book just about any act imaginable no matter what their draw might actually be. The venue used to be an old theater,so it has two separate rooms each with an old movie screen and projector. Only the smaller rear room still shows films on occasion and where the DJ/club night events happen. The main room which is about twice the size is where actual bands get booked. Cheap drinks, Deliverance style atmosphere, bath rooms you'd never want to use, what else could you possibly want from a modern day dive venue?
